China Calls on U.S. to Uphold International Law

(MENAFN) China issued a sharp rebuke to the United States on Wednesday, calling on Washington to honor international legal frameworks after President Donald Trump declared that only his personal moral compass could constrain his authority.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized the critical role of global legal standards in maintaining world order.

"The international law based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter is the corner stone of existing international order and important basis for settling international disputes," Mao Ning told reporters.

She stressed that adherence to established legal norms remains essential for preventing global chaos. "Upholding international law is key to defending international fairness and justice and preventing a return to the law of the jungle," Mao stated when questioned about Trump's controversial remarks.

Though she avoided directly naming the American president, Mao delivered a pointed message toward major powers. "Major countries need to take the lead in respecting international law and fulfilling their obligations under international law," she added.

Trump's comments came during a recent New York Times interview when he was questioned about potential constraints on his executive authority. "Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It's the only thing that can stop me," the president told the publication last week on Wednesday.

The president went further in dismissing international legal obligations. "I don't need international law," Trump said, adding: "I'm not looking to hurt people."

When journalists pressed him on whether his administration must comply with international law, Trump responded ambiguously. "I do," he acknowledged, but immediately qualified: "It depends what your definition of international law is."

The exchange underscores growing tensions between Beijing and Washington over governance standards and global diplomatic norms.
