Mayor Orders Investigation into Federal Immigration Officers’ Conduct
"We are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago will not sit idly by while Trump floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents," Johnson said in a statement on Saturday.
According to Johnson, this order makes Chicago the first city in the United States to actively pursue legal responsibility for purported wrongdoing by federal immigration personnel.
He criticized federal immigration officers for violating constitutional protections, disrupting local neighborhoods, and provoking hazardous encounters, all while being insulated from local or civilian oversight.
This move comes shortly after nine local district attorneys formed a coalition this week to target federal law enforcement officers who infringe upon state laws.
In addition, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has introduced legislation aimed at preventing cooperative arrangements between local police agencies and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
